From November 17th to 19th, the 65th National Pharmaceutical Machinery Expo and the 2024 (Autumn) China International Pharmaceutical Machinery Expo were held at the Xiamen International Expo Center. All 11 exhibition halls were fully occupied, and a synthetic biology technology exhibition area was set up in the newly opened conference center this year. Therefore, each step requires a deepening understanding of biological processes and an expansion of their applications. In a laboratory environment, production conditions are mostly controlled under ideal conditions, and there is no need to consider the limitations of pressure and energy consumption indicators for the treatment of the three wastes. However, industrial mass production has brought many new dimensions beyond the laboratory scenario, such as the interaction of cell groups in a complex bioreactor environment, the transfer of nutrients, oxygen, heat, etc. (material and liquid mixing, agitator design) The control of internal environmental conditions in reactors (such as temperature, humidity, oxygen, pH value, etc.) and the design of large-scale bioreactors will become of vital importance. Therefore, during the industrial mass production process, every link, from the cultivation conditions of microorganisms to the design of fermentation tanks, needs to be carefully adjusted; otherwise, a small mistake will cause incalculable cost losses in the amplification process.


In addition, technologies such as separation, extraction and purification after fermentation are one of the core competencies of biomanufacturing enterprises. The fermentation, separation and purification processes involved in synthetic biology share similarities with traditional biological fermentation. The fermentation broth is a complex multiphase system, containing cells, metabolic products, culture media, various proteins and inorganic salts, etc. The content of impurities is relatively high, and the separation of solids and colloidal substances dispersed in it is rather difficult. There are various separation and purification techniques after fermentation, including cell disruption technology, precipitation separation and purification technology, centrifugal separation and purification technology, membrane separation and purification technology, chromatography separation and purification technology, extraction technology, freeze-drying technology, etc. Reliable and efficient separation and purification technology is one of the core competencies of biomanufacturing enterprises.
